Join The Militia
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." 2nd Amendment Ratified 12/15/1791.
Who is the militia?
Section 311 of US Code Title 10, entitled, "Militia: composition and classes" :
"(a)" The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard."
The term Militia has been demonized over the years by media so as to instill a fear in the minds of the average American. This act was intentional so as to create a negative image of the militia. They know that if the militia can be suppressed, there will be less resistance as the American Freedoms are trampled. Most people today shirk their personal duties, either out of cowardice, or lack of financial gain.
The truth is, the militia is your first line of defense in a catastrophe, or hostile invasion. It is our second amendment right to assemble as a militia. It is our second amendment right, that as militia our right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
Now more than ever it looks as if the militia will be called to action. America teeters on the verge of collapse. Out of control spending, illegal immigration, as well as poor government policy has pushed America to the edge, and all it would take is one major event to send it over. An event such as a terrorist attack, detonating a nuclear or biological weapon inside the U.S. could set off a disaster. A nuclear device sett off several miles into the earths atmosphere over America would create an EMP 'Electro Magnetic Pulse' that would disable almost every electrical device, automobile, power grid and communications in the U.S. It would also cause untold death and damages resulting from nuclear fall out.
You may think that wouldn't affect you much. You can do without electricity, phone, a vehicle for a few days. But think about this: a catastrophe this size would take months to repair. Fuel trucks damaged in the blast would not be able to deliver their fuel to the stations. America also does not have the food reserves it once had. The grocery stores will be empty almost immediately since most homes only have about one weeks worth of groceries on hand. In cities there will be chaos, and within two weeks roving gangs will spread out in search of food. When there is no food available to give them they will become violent and just take what they need. Martial law will be deployed stripping Americans of all rights. Are you ready for a situation like this? Are you able to defend what you do have against those that will want to take it? This is why it is good to be involved with your local militia. In an event like this we can only survive as a community, sharing resources and watching each others backs.
Money would not be of any value in a scenario like this since most people would end up going to the barter system. For instance, if I have two bags of rice and you would like to buy one bag, I probably won't sell it since I can't eat money. Yet I might trade it for a few dozen eggs, a few rounds of ammo, or for labor on my farm. This is called "The Barter System".
How can you join the militia?
You may already be a member. The militia is a collective group of individuals with will to serve their country if called to do so. There is no one central organization, or a membership to a certain group. However you are responsible for the procurement, and maintenance of your equipment. You will find a militia supply list below. It is recommended that you carry your gear into the field regularly. Camp out using only this equipment. It will help you fine tune your list of essentials. You will find there are items you need to add as well as some that you can leave out, but the point is to get to know your equipment.
Shoot as often as you can. Get to know your weapon inside and out.
Get in with a militia group, and practice various scenarios. Get used to working together with others towards a common goal. It doesn't have to be all serious either. Buy some paintball or air-soft guns and have some fun with it. Just get involved while there is possibly still time. It is your right as well as your duty.

Become self sufficient
If you have never farmed before, now would be a good time to start. If America crashes will you be able to feed your family or will you depend on someone else to do it? Learn to garden. Even if you have minimal space you can still produce much of your own fruits and vegetables. Squash in particular will produce a good quantity of produce in very little space. However, they will only stay fresh for about a week after harvesting. To keep them long term you will need to either freeze or can them. If a total crash of the economy did happen, most folks probably will not have electricity so canning may be your best bet.
Vegetables need plenty of sun, especially the morning sun. If your area stays shady most of the day, you will probably have a scrawny harvest. Some vegetables do well planted together. I have started planting half-white runner beans in the same row with my corn. The beans climb on the corn and I don't have to bend down to pick them. Carrots do well planted around tomatoes, and radishes planted in with your greens will help keep bugs away.
Even a steep hillside can become a useful garden with a little bit of work. However, I would recommend digging it down to where you can place raised beds in a stair step pattern. Almost anything is usable for raised beds. If you have access to old railroad ties great. If not make do with what you do have; 5 gallon buckets, a child's swimming pool, an old bathtub, or used tires. Tires are especially good for growing potatoes in. As the potato grows you can stack another tire on top of it and fill with dirt. Continue the process until the fall harvest. The potatoes will keep fine through the winter right where they are. When you want potatoes just pull a tire off the top and shake it out.
If you have never gardened before, now is a good time to learn, before it becomes a necessity. Most vegetables take around 3 months to mature, so don't wait until you are already hungry to plant.
Also pick you up a pressure cooker and learn to can your vegetables. Some vegetables will store for a long period of time in a basement or root cellar. These include pumpkins, potatoes, and winter squash. Okra, beans, peas, corn, and summer squash will need to be either canned or dried.
